Pinkerton 8, Goffstown 1

THE RUNDOWN

Thoughts and observations from Pinkerton Academy’s 8-1 victory over Goffstown on Friday at Saint Anselm College:

• Pinkerton’s victory left the Astros (13-0) as the only unbeaten team in Division I. It also made Pinkerton the favorite to earn the one bye that’s awarded for the Division I tournament. The Astros still have to play Exeter (13-1) and Londonderry (11-2) next week however, so there’s still some heavy lifting to do. Goffstown dropped to 12-1.

• No one stood out more than lefty Michael Cioffi, who pitched all seven innings and didn’t allow an earned run. Goffstown’s only run came on an overthrow of third on an attempted stolen base that allowed Noah Durham to score. Cioffi limited the Grizzlies to four hits, struck out six and walked one. He also collected three hits, an RBI and scored twice.

“I came into this game ready to go,” Cioffi said. “Knew Goffstown was a good team. Knew they had good bats. Just wanted to pound the zone and get outs is really it. I don’t know where the hitting came from, but I’ve been hitting the ball. It’s really the first year that I’ve been in the lineup. See the ball and hit the ball.”

• Cioffi, who will play for SNHU next season, hasn’t lost a game on the mound since Pinkerton’s setback to Londonderry last season. “Mike’s been great for us,” Pinkerton coach Steve Campo said. “Every time he goes out there he gives us an opportunity to win. He’s got a devastating curveball and he’s beefed up his fastball, which has a little bit of movement. Impressed with how he’s worked and developed over the years.”

• Goffstown entered the contest having scored at least 10 runs in five of its last six games.

• Each team made two errors, but four of Pinkerton’s eight runs were unearned. “We didn’t make the plays when it mattered,” Goffstown coach Adam Lawrence said. “I think we had some good at-bats. The hits we had were spread out throughout the game. There weren’t any timely hits when we needed them. There’s a reason (Cioffi) is one of the best pitchers in the state.”

• Lawrence on the bye: “If you get a bye its great because it sets up your pitching rotation, but just play the games.”

Matt Hanna, John Hanlon and Anthony Caruso each added two hits for the Astros, who received three RBIs from Brendan Horne.
