Sophomore Chris Rouleau tossed a complete game as fifth-seeded Monadnock beat third-seeded Bishop Brady 2-1 in Saturday’s Division III championship game.
Rouleau, a sophomore, gave up seven hits and struck out four.
“I knew I wasn’t going to strike out a lot of guys because I didn’t have my best velo today, but as long as I could make good pitches, efficient pitches that’s all that matters,” Rouleau said. “A little bit of adrenaline might have helped at the end.”
Monadnock trailed 1-0 until Wesley McWhirk scored on a wild pitch in the fourth. The Huskies (18-3) took a 2-1 lead when Koby Kidney drove in Nick Ball with a single to right field in the sixth.
Bishop Brady, which beat Monadnock 6-2 during the regular season, was seeking its first championship since it won the Class M title in 1989. The Giants (17-3) scored on Luke Bedard’s RBI single that drove in Winn Thomas in the first inning. Bishop Brady left the bases loaded in the inning.
Bishop Brady’s Owen Thornton started on the mound and allowed a run in four innings. Jack Spiess gave up a run in three innings of relief.
Bishop Brady had runners on first and second with two outs in the fifth when Monadnock left fielder Chase Elliott made a diving catch that saved two runs.
“Unbelievable,” Monadnock coach Tom Cote said. “I would like to send that in to SportsCenter. That ball would have changed every bit of that game. Just an unbelievable read right off the bat. Sold out for the team. Makes you feel good as a coach. Should make him feel good too.”
Monadnock was playing in the championship game for the fifth straight season. The Huskies have won four Division III titles during that span.
“It’s a pleasant surprise,” Cote said. “We knew we had some good players here. We have great community with a lot of support towards baseball, so every year we’re going to be strong and we know that. It’s just putting the pieces of the puzzle together the right way.
“We practice six days a week. We take no Saturday’s off. We earn what we get at Monadnock.”
