Graduate student Jake Walkinshaw (Seymour, Conn.) allowed one run over eight innings and matched his career high with 13 strikeouts, as he made a 12-run outburst stand up for the ninth-ranked Southern New Hampshire University baseball team, which closed out its Florida trip with a 12-1 victory against Adelphi University on Saturday.

STANDOUT PERFORMERS

  • Walkinshaw gave up three hits and did not walk a batter, as he struck out 13 for the second time on the swing through the Sunshine State.
  • Redshirt-junior Joshua Goldstein (Haverhill, Mass.) was 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored.
  • Sophomores Dakota Mulcay (Goffstown, N.H.; RBI, two runs) and Idelson Taveras (Lawrence, Mass.; run) each went 2-for-4.
  • Junior Jake Coro (Johnston, R.I.; walk, two RBI, two runs) and classmate Dylan Faircloth (Cleveland, Texas; RBI, run) both finished 1-for-3.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Adelphi found the scoreboard first, with Brandon Morse leading off the game with a double down the left field line and scoring on a two-out double to left from Lawrence Cicileo.
  • Southern New Hampshire answered with three runs in the home half of the inning, with junior Tom Blandini (Bow, N.H.) tying the game when he led off with a single to left-center, moved to second on an infield error and came around to score on a second error. Coro’s RBI fielder’s choice grounder and a sacrifice fly by freshman Alex Kennedy (Braintree, Mass.) made it 3-1.
  • Goldstein nudged the lead to 4-1 in the second with an RBI single to right that scored Taveras, who led off with a double to right. The Penmen then scored four runs with two outs in the inning to break it open. Faircloth came through with an RBI single, before sophomore Sam Henrie (Middleboro, Mass.) scored on a wild pitch to make it 6-1. Coro followed with a run-scoring triple to center and then came home on a wild pitch to end the inning with SNHU ahead, 8-1.
  • Southern New Hampshire added a run in the sixth on a single to right from Goldstein, who was able to stay in a run-down long enough to allow Mulcay to score the ninth run.
  • The Penmen polished off the win with a three-run eighth. Mulcay started it with an RBI single to right-center, with grad student John Stanton (Sandwich, Mass.), who drew a pinch-hit walk, scoring on a wild pitch, before Blandini plated the final run with a sac fly to center.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • Blandini went 1-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored.
  • Sophomore Jeffrey Praml (Bridgewater, N.J.) struck out one and walked one in a shutout ninth.

NOTES

  • Southern New Hampshire has won seven of its last nine.
  • SNHU went 6-2 on its Florida trip, outscoring its opponents, 58-37.
  • Walkinshaw retired 10 straight from the second inning to the fifth and then ended his outing by setting down 11-in-a-row.
  • In two Florida starts, Walkinshaw was 2-0 with a 0.56 ERA, allowing one run on nine hits over 16 innings, striking out 26 and not issuing a single walk.
  • Walkinshaw’s 19th-career victory moves him into a third-place tie with Mark Perec (1996-99) on the program’s all-time wins list. He also passed Jason Paul (2001-04) and Ryan Quinn (2006-09) to move into ninth on the career strikeouts list with 172.
  • Goldstein owns a five-game hitting streak, while Blandini has hit safely in four straight.
  • Henrie, who was 0-for-3 with a walk and two runs scored, has his five-game hitting streak snapped.

UP NEXT

  • The Penmen return to action March 23 when they take on Southern Connecticut State University in doubleheader action that begins at noon.
  • The scheduled home opener for SNHU is Wednesday, March 27 (3:30 p.m.) when it plays host to Saint Michael’s College at Penmen Field.
