HANOVER— The 2019 Dartmouth baseball schedule features trips to the states of Texas, North Carolina and Florida before the Ivy League slate begins in late March.
The Big Green will test itself right off the bat by opening the season with a four-game series at the University of Texas at San Antonio beginning on Feb. 22. Last year the Roadrunners won 32 games while finishing fifth in the 12-team standings of Conference USA, which sent a pair of teams to the NCAA Regionals.
The following weekend Dartmouth will travel to the USA Baseball complex in Cary, N.C., to play four games in a tournament that features Tulane, Fairleigh Dickinson and Saint Joseph’s.
After a week and half off for winter exams, head coach Bob Whalen will lead his team down to Florida to play not only in the RussMatt Invitational, but a three-game set with a 2018 NCAA Regional team — South Florida — on March 15-17.
Upon returning from the Sunshine State, Dartmouth will make a pit stop in New Jersey to open up Ivy League play at Princeton on March 23-24. The Big Green will play at the 2018 Ivy League champion, Columbia, to conclude the month of March, and fans will finally get their first look at Dartmouth at Red Rolfe Field at Biondi Park when Penn comes to town on April 6-7.
Of the final 19 games on the schedule, 15 will be played in Hanover, including the final three conference series against Harvard (April 20-21), Yale (April 27-28) and Cornell (May 4-5). The mid-week, non-conference opponents all hail from the Northeast — Quinnipiac, Holy Cross, UMass Lowell, Middlebury, Siena and Maine. The game with the Black Bears on May 1 will be just the second between Coach Whalen’s alma mater and Dartmouth in the last 20 seasons.
The Big Green finished the 2018 campaign with an overall mark of 17-22-1 and an 12-8-1 record in the Ivy League, extending its streak of winning records in league play to 11 years to match a program record while placing third, a mere half a game behind Columbia.
