Rumble Ponies 4, Fisher Cats 3

BINGHAMTON N.Y. – The New Hampshire Fisher Cats (22-36, 56-69) dropped their series opener on Tuesday at Mirabito Stadium to the Binghamton Rumble Ponies (30-28, 57-70), 4-3. The ‘Cats opened the game with a run in the first inning and led until the seventh, but the Ponies scored three runs to take the opener. The Fisher Cats outhit Binghamton, 12-5, but finished 2 for 16 with runners in scoring position.
Four Fisher Cats hitters had multi-hit games, including three-hit games from Alexis Hernandez and Tucker Toman. Left fielder Mathieu Vallee extended his hit streak to six games and is hitting .339 in 19 Double-A games.
New Hampshire starter Mason Olson fired 4 1/3 innings against the Rumble Ponies. Olson allowed one earned run on two hits with three strikeouts. Reliever Aaron Munson followed with 1 2/3 scoreless innings. Reliever Devereaux Harrison (L, 0-1) was hit for three runs (two unearned) in the seventh inning, and Kelana Sauer followed with a scoreless eighth.
Binghamton right-hander Gary Gill Hill was tagged for two runs on eight hits across four innings. Douglas Orellana, Carlos Guzman (W, 5-1), Brendan Girton and Garrett Stratton tossed the final frames. Despite a fielding error and a run scored, Stratton earned his sixth save with Binghamton since joining the club in mid-June.

New Hampshire struck first on an RBI groundout in the bottom of the first hit by first baseman Carter Cunningham. In the fourth, Toman singled and shortstop Cutter Coffey walked. Two batters later, Vallee ripped an RBI single to make it 2-0.
Binghamton answered in the bottom of the fifth. Catcher Chris Suero worked a leadoff walk and stole second. Following a groundout, center fielder John Bay lined an RBI double and cut the Ponies’ deficit in half.
The Rumble Ponies took the lead in the bottom of the seventh. Left fielder Eli Serrano III and Bay reached to open the inning, and both scored on a two-run double hit by first baseman Corey Collins. Collins scored one pitch later on a sacrifice bunt coupled with an error which made it 4-2.
The Fisher Cats scored a run in the ninth on an error but left the tying and go-ahead run on base in a 4-3 loss to Binghamton.
New Hampshire and Binghamton continue their six-game series on Wednesday with first pitch slated for 6:07 p.m. Lefty Johnny King (0-1, 2.08 ERA) will start for the Fisher Cats, and the Rumble Ponies will counter with right-hander Noah Hall (1-3, 6.75 ERA).
