Fisher Cats7, Rumble Ponies 6

BINGHAMTON, NY – Despite a 6-1 deficit into the ninth, the New Hampshire Fisher Cats (24-39, 58-72) scored six runs in the final frame and stunned the Binghamton Rumble Ponies (33-30, 60-72), 7-6, on Sunday night at Mirabito Stadium. Down to his final strike, designated hitter Aaron Parker ripped a go-ahead three-run double that helped the Cats acquire their biggest comeback win of the season.

The Fisher Cats trailed 6-1 entering the ninth inning. First baseman Dub Gleed doubled, and right fielder Carter Cunningham made it 6-2 on a ringing double. Second baseman Adrian Pinto singled, and with two runners on, third baseman Tucker Toman cracked an RBI knock. Shortstop Cutter Coffey walked to load the bases and catcher Edward Duran delivered an RBI single. Following back-to-back outs, Parker cleared the bases and made it 7-6.

New Hampshire starter Austin Cates struck out five batters and allowed two earned runs across five innings pitched. Lefty Mason Olson fired a strong sixth inning but allowed four runs to cross in the seventh. Right-hander Gage Stanifer (W, 6-8) struck out four batters in the eighth inning and picked up the win. Stanifer became the first Fisher Cats’ arm to strike out four in a frame since 2014. Reliever Kelena Sauer (SV, 3) secured the save and ended the game on a double play.

Binghamton starter Gabe Davis tossed 4-1/3 innings of one-run ball and struck out five. Reliever Bryce Conley followed with 2-2/3 scoreless innings and Brendan Girton did not allow a run in the eighth. Carlos Guzman (L, 6-3) inherited a 6-1 lead but was tagged for six runs on five hits in the ninth and failed to record an out. Gabriel Rodriguez attained every out in the ninth but allowed Parker’s double.

Binghamton answered in the bottom of the fourth. Shortstop Marco Vargas walked and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Designated hitter Jefferson Rojas singled and third baseman Jacob Reimer brought both runners home on a two-run single, 2-1.

It appeared the Rumble Ponies blew the game open in the bottom of the seventh. Left fielder Corey Collins and center fielder JT Benson opened the inning with back-to-back singles. Three batters later, Vargas laced an RBI single. The Mets’ top prospect (MLB Pipeline) Rojas (9) followed with a three-run homer which made it 6-1.
