Tobin propels SNHU to victory
When and Where: February 24, 2019 – Myrtle Beach, S.C. (Cal Ripken Experience)
Score: Southern New Hampshire University 11, St. Thomas Aquinas College 7
Records: SNHU 6-2, STAC 0-4
Sophomores Sam Henrie (Middleboro, Mass.) and Dakota Mulcay (Goffstown, N.H.) each went 2-for-5 with two RBI and two runs scored, as the ninth-ranked Southern New Hampshire University baseball team scored 11 unanswered runs to wrap up a perfect Myrtle Beach trip with an 11-7 victory against No. 19 St. Thomas Aquinas on Sunday morning in a rematch of the previous two NCAA East Region finals.
STANDOUT PERFORMERS
- In addition to Henrie and Mulcay, junior Jake Coro (Johnston, R.I.) also turned in a multi-hit effort, going 2-for-3 with a walk, RBI and three runs scored.
- Junior Wesley Tobin (Portsmouth, N.H.) earned the win, tossing seven innings, allowing four runs on seven hits, while striking out five and not walking a batter.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- St. Thomas Aquinas drew first blood in the top of the second inning, with Michael Morgan leading off by getting hit with a pitch, before Dylan Klock followed with a two-run homer to left that put the Spartans up, 2-0.
- Southern New Hampshire answered in the bottom of the frame, as junior Dylan Faircloth (Cleveland, Texas) worked a lead-off walk and scored when Mulcay ripped a triple down the right field line. Mulcay then came around to tie it on a grounder off the bat off senior Joshua Zbierski (Stafford Springs, Conn.) that the shortstop could not handle.
- SNHU went ahead for good in the third when Coro led off with a double, advanced to third on a Henrie groundout and scored on Faircloth’s sacrifice fly to right.
- The Penmen made it 5-2 in the fifth with a pair of unearned runs. Coro started the inning with a walk, while a Henrie double to center put a pair in scoring position. Mulcay then put a hard-hit ball in play that neither the first baseman or right fielder could handle cleanly, allowing both runs to come home.
- SNHU broke it open by hanging a six-spot in the sixth. RBI singles from sophomore Idelson Taveras (Lawrence, Mass.) and Coro extended the lead to 7-2, before Henrie’s two-run triple to right-center made it 9-2. Another Faircloth sac fly brought in the 10th run of the game for the Penmen and was the first out of the inning. Redshirt-junior Sean Doherty (Haverhill, Mass.) capped the scoring in the frame with a two-out, run-scoring single up the middle that widened the gap even further to 11-2.
- St. Thomas Aquinas reached Tobin again in the top of the seventh, with Brian Donnelly’s two-run jack to left cutting into the Southern New Hampshire lead at 11-4.
- The Spartans pushed two more across in the eighth against the SNHU bullpen. With two on and no one out, Klock hit a grounder to third, where a throwing error brought in the first run. A bases-loaded walk later in the inning plated an unearned run that trimmed the deficit to 11-6.
- STAC added one more in the ninth on a two-out RBI single from Klock and would strand a pair to end it.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Faircloth was 0-for-1 with a walk, two RBI and a run scored.
- Doherty finished 1-for-4 with an RBI.
- Taveras went 1-for-5, knocking in a run and scoring one.
- Senior Thomas Novick (Sudbury, Mass.) relinquished two runs – one earned – on a walk and a hit batsmen, as he did not retire any of the three batters he faced.
- Redshirt-sophomore Alex Gomes (Peabody, Mass.) worked two innings, allowing one run on three hits, while walking two and striking out a pair.
NOTES
- Southern New Hampshire has won five straight, as it finishes the South Carolina trip a perfect 5-0, outscoring its opponents, 39-20, over the five games.
- The two teams met in the regional final in 2017, with St. Thomas Aquinas winning it all, before SNHU prevailed in last year’s rematch and punched its ticket to the World Series for the first time since 2012.
UP NEXT
- The Penmen return to action Saturday, March 2 when they take on Shepherd University in doubleheader action that begins at noon.
