ALBANY, Ga. – Senior left fielder Connor Parent (Katy, Texas) had two hits and classmate JJ Dunn (Nashua, N.H.) hurled four strikeouts, but the Saint Anselm College baseball team fell to the host Golden Rams from Albany State University on Friday by a 9-4 margin.
Box Score
Saint Anselm falls to 0-3 to begin the season while Albany State improved to 5-10. The Hawks will play three additional games against the Golden Rams, beginning with a Saturday doubleheader that begins at 1 p.m.
With two outs in the top of the third inning, freshman Matt Collins (Beverly, Mass.) drew a walk and later swiped second base. Following a walk from sophomore Matthew Butigian (Plainview, N.Y.) and a hit-by-pitch drawn by freshman Jack Dunklee (Wilbraham, Mass.), senior Oscar Larranaga (Tucson, Ariz.) hit a single to left field that drove in both Collins and Butigian to give the visitors a 2-0 lead.
The Hawks tacked on another run in the third inning as junior Andre Gaudet (Lynn, Mass.) singled to left-center field with two outs, driving in junior Blaine Johnson III (Massapequa Park, N.Y.) who walked with one out in the frame. Freshman Enzo Merlonghi (Monroe, Conn.) picked up a single to left field later in the game, driving home the Hawks fourth run of the contest.
Saint Anselm yielded a run in the home half of the fourth on an error and later saw three runs come across to score in the fifth inning with a double, a balk and a sacrifice fly. The teams played to a 4-4 deadlock after five-and-a-half innings.
The bottom of the sixth inning would see a wild pitch score another Albany State run and in the bottom of the seventh inning, four runs came around to score with the help of four balks. These miscues proved to be game-winners for the Golden Rams, who scored all five of the day’s final runs.
Dunn pitched five innings, striking out four batters and allowing three earned runs. Freshman David Hunter (Middleton, Mass.) struck out a batter in one inning, walking three men, before classmate Taylor French (Goffstown, N.H.) yielded two runs without retiring a batter.
Sophomore Will Conaton (Windham, N.H.) and junior Ryan Schworer (Medfield, Mass.) pitched the final two innings for the Hawks, combining for three strikeouts.
The tandem of Roman Oliu and Chasen Roulhac struck out nine Hawks batters, allowing only six hits across nine innings of work. Walker led the hosts with a 3-for-4 performance, driving in one run.
