Windham’s Conaton strong in loss

ALBANY, Ga. – The Saint Anselm College baseball team had a strong pitching performance by sophomore Will Conaton (Windham, N.H.), but fell to the host Golden Rams from Albany State University by a 2-1 margin on Sunday to close a four-game series.

The Hawks fall to 1-5 overall on the year and will head to the University of West Georgia on Tuesday, Mar. 5 for a 4 p.m. contest. The Golden Rams move to 7-11 overall on the young season.

Conaton pitched seven-and-one-third innings, yielding two earned runs and striking out four batters, but drew the loss as the Hawks offense mustered only one hit on the day. Junior Ryan Schworer (Medfield, Mass.) retired two Golden Rams batters in relief.

The Hawks scored their one run in the sixth inning as freshman Chris Schworer (Medfield, Mass.) drew a leadoff walk. Back-to-back miscues by the Golden Rams allowed Schworer to come across and score on a fly ball by senior Oscar Larranaga (Tucson, Ariz.) that was botched by the right fielder.

Albany State erased the one-run lead in the bottom of the sixth as a two-run home run by Quantico Dodson-Williams pushed the Golden Rams ahead, 2-1.

Down by one run in the ninth inning, the Hawks picked up their first hit in the top of the ninth inning as Larranaga singled to left field. Senior Tyler McKeon (Rutland, Mass.) bunted Larranaga over to second base, but back-to-back fly outs ended the contest.

The pitching tandem of Blaylor Galice and Tyler Berry pitched nine innings for Albany State, allowing only one hit and striking out nine batters.
