Salem’s Bergeron shares GNAC honor

STANDISH, Maine – The Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) weekly honors have been released and Saint Joseph’s College freshman pitcher Matt Bergeron (Salem, N.H.) has been selected as the GNAC Pitcher and Co-Rookie of the Week.

Bergeron performed very well in a pair of appearances versus 2018 NCAA Tournament teams last week, as the freshman right-hander posted a 1.00 ERA with five strikeouts and just five hits allowed in nine innings against UMass.-Boston and Franklin, both on the road. In a 3-1 victory over Franklin on Saturday, Bergeron allowed a lead-off home run and cruised for the remainder of the game, allowing just three hits while fanning five against the mid-east power to earn the victory. He also threw two scoreless frames, allowing just one hit, in a 9-8 loss at UMass.-Boston.

So far this season the freshman hurler is 4-0 with a 2.33 ERA with nine strikeouts and five walks allowed in 19.1 innings. Opponents are hitting .203 (14-69) with two extra-base hits against him.

Bergeron shares the GNAC Rookie of the Week honor with Albertus Magnus freshman outfielder Elijah Spataj (Cheshire, Conn.), who hit .400 (4-10) with two home runs and six RBI in three games.

Saint Joseph’s (13-3) will play at Husson University on Thursday at 4 p.m..
