BINGHAMTON, N.Y. — The New Hampshire Fisher Cats (Blue Jays) snapped a three-game losing streak with a 4-1 win over the Binghamton Rumble Ponies (Mets) Tuesday night at NYSEG Stadium.
New Hampshire plated a run in the first for the fourth consecutive game. Josh Palacios walked to begin the inning, moved to second on an Alberto Mineo single and later scored when Chad Spanberger dropped a base hit into no-man’s land in shallow centerfield.
Leading 1-0 in the fourth, the Fisher Cats doubled their advantage courtesy of a Kevin Smith lead-off home run, his second of the season
Another two runs came around in the fifth. Kacy Clemens was hit by a pitch and moved to second on a bunt. Up stepped Palacios, who ripped a double into the gap in left to score Clemens. Santiago Espinal followed with a near identical two-bagger to add another score and improve New Hampshire’s edge to 4-0.
Starter Hector Perez (W, 1-1) turned in his best outing on the young season. The right-hander worked five scoreless stanzas, scattered four hits, walked four and struck out seven to earn the win.
Jake Fishman tossed two shutout frames of relief and managed to escape a bases loaded, one out jam in the seventh to keep Binghamton at bay.
Despite a late Rumble Ponies run, Kirby Snead (S, 3) retired the only man he faced in the ninth to secure a 4-1 win.
The series concludes tomorrow night in Binghamton. LHP Zach Logue of the Fisher Cats will go up against Binghamton southpaw David Peterson. Coverage begins at 6:15 p.m. and continues with first pitch at 6:35 p.m. on the WGIR Fisher Cats Radio Network.
