LOWELL, Mass. — For the first time since the 2017 season and sixth time overall, LeLacheur Park and UMass-Lowell will host the 2020 America East Baseball Championship, the conference has announced. The six-team, double elimination tournament is scheduled for May 19-24.
“Hosting the America East baseball tournament in 2020 is a great way to showcase our university and our ballpark, and I look forward to having the opportunity to show off this campus.,” Lowell coach Ken Harring said. “We witnessed the tournament here during our Division I transition, and now look forward to the opportunity to play in it on our home turf. LeLacheur Park is a special place and we look forward to representing UMass Lowell in the best way possible.”
After the tournament was played in Lowell from 2013 to 2017, it moved to turf field locations at Maine and Binghamton for the past two seasons. With the return, the ballpark has now moved into a tie with Frawley Stadium in Wilmington, Del. for the most tournaments hosted in the league’s history.
LeLacheur Park opened in 1998 and is the home park for the Lowell Spinners, the Class-A affiliate of the Boston Red Sox, and has been home for UMass-Lowell baseball since 1999. Heading into the last season, the park underwent renovations that included a new field surface and LED lights.
“We are thrilled to help UMass-Lowell host the America East Championship this season,” said Shawn Smith, general manager of the Lowell Spinners. “It is just another extension for our great partnership with the university.”
Binghamton has won the tournament three times in the five seasons in Lowell, with UMBC taking the title in 2017. As well as hosting the America East tournament, LeLacheur Park has welcomed the Northeast-10 Championship and NCAA Division II Regional Tournament.
