MANSFIELD, Mass. – Defending NECC Champion New England College was selected second in the 2020 New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) coaches’ poll. The Pilgrims collected two first-place votes and 32 total points to land the second spot. Second-year head coach Terry Doyle will lead an experienced squad that returns five starters from its championship squad. Among the returners is senior shortstop Luis Atiles, who was a first-team All-NECC selection in 2019. Atiles hit .531 in conference play, tops in the league. His 26 hits in conference play were also league-leading.
The Pilgrims trailed only Mitchell College (35 points), which won the regular-season title in 2019. Eastern Nazarene College (25 points) came in third, while Becker College (19), Elms College (13), Lesley University (12), and Dean College (11) rounded out the poll.

New England College will begin its 2020 campaign on the road Feb. 27, when the Pilgrims take on Emerson College. NEC will then head to Myrtle Beach, S.C., where it will take on seven opponents in six days. After returning, the Pilgrims will stick to the road as they will take on Salve Regina (March 11), Colby College (March 15), and MIT (March 18) before their home opener on March 21 against Becker College. The defending NECC champions will play each NECC opponent three times, with a doubleheader coming on Saturdays.
