MANCHESTER – Top Blue Jays prospect Austin Martin homered and starter Kyle Johnston allowed one run over five innings, but the Binghamton Rumble Ponies (Mets Double-A affiliate) hit three two-run homers in the seventh inning to top the New Hampshire Fisher Cats (Toronto Blue Jays) 9-6 on Sunday at Delta Dental Stadium. Binghamton (9-20) won five of the six games in the series.
The Rumble Ponies entered the top of the sixth inning trailing 2-1 after a strong start by Johnston, who allowed one run and struck out eight batters. The Rumble Ponies scored a pair of runs in the sixth, and hit three two-run homers in the seventh to back starter Tony Dibrell (2-1). Will Toffey, Hayden Senger, and Desmond Lindsay all homered in the sixth. Manny Rodriguez had homered earlier in the game.
The Fisher Cats (10-19) hit two long balls on the day. Martin hit his second homer of the series in the first inning, and Nick Podkul ripped his first home run in the fifth to give the Fisher Cats a short-lived 2-1 lead.
Trailing 9-2 at the stretch, New Hampshire started a comeback effort with an RBI fielder’s choice from Demi Orimoloye, who also hit a pair of doubles earlier in the game. The Fisher Cats brought the tying run to the plate in the ninth thanks to a bases loaded hit-by-pitch and a two-run single from Brock Lundquist, but Binghamton stranded two runners to hang on, 9-6.
