HARRISBURG, Pa. — Despite trailing by a run after eight innings, the New Hampshire Fisher Cats (Toronto Blue Jays Double-A affiliate) defeated the Harrisburg Senators (Washington Nationals) 6-5 in Tuesday’s series opener at FNB Field.
New Hampshire’s Samad Taylor went 2-for-4 with a three-run home run in the ninth, and Demi Orimoloye drove in a pair, going 2-4 on the evening. The Fisher Cats won despite trailing after the eighth inning for the third time on the season.
The Fisher Cats (39-42) were scoreless through five innings, as Harrisburg starter Seth Romero (5.0 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 9 K) stifled the New Hampshire bats. In the sixth, Chavez Young (1-3, BB, RBI) put the Fisher Cats up 1-0 on a bases-loaded walk, before Demi Orimoloye (2-4, 2RBI) delivered a two-RBI single to give the Fisher Cats a 3-0 lead.
Harrisburg (30-54) were similarly shut down by Fisher Cats starter Casey Lawrence (5.0 IP, 2 H, 1 BB, 3 K). The Senators pushed across two runs in the bottom of the seventh on a Gilbert Lara double against Jon Harris (H, 2). Trailing 3-2 in the eighth and with Marcus Reyes (W, 2-0) on the mound, Harrisburg’s Donovan Casey hit his 14th home run of the year to give the Senators a 4-3 lead.
Trailing in the final frame, Orimoloye and Chris Bec struck for back-to-back singles. With two runners aboard and one out, Taylor hit his team-leading 14th home run of the season, giving the Fisher Cats a 6-4 lead.
Sean Rackoski (S, 3) entered in the ninth, and despite allowing a run to score on a wild pitch secured the victory for New Hampshire.
Carlos Navas (BS, 1; L, 0-1), who entered in the ninth inning for Harrisburg, was charged with the loss following Taylor’s home run.
