New Castle, Del. – Graduate student Josh Roberge (Chelmsford, Mass.) tossed a complete-game and SNHU rode first-inning homers from seniors Sam Henrie (Middleboro, Mass.) and Dakota Mulcay (Goffstown, N.H.) to a 6-2 win in the first game of the NCAA East Region 1 Championship over host Wilmington on Thursday.

HOW IT HAPPENED: 

  • The Penmen jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning.   Rivera started the game with a base-hit and Henrie blasted a home run to right center.  Two batters later, Mulcay took one out to right center for a 3-0 lead.
  • SNHU scratched out another run in the third inning.  Redshirt sophomore Cristian Mercedes (Providence, R.I.) singled and stole second, advancing to third base on a catcher throwing error.  He scored on a wild pitch to make it 4-0.
  • The first hit for the Wildcats came in the top of the fifth inning when Shawn Edevane homered into the batters eye to cut the lead to 4-1.
  • The Penmen scored in the fifth inning as Rivera reached on an error, stole second, and scored on a single by Schwartz.
  • Rivera scored another run in the seventh inning after reaching on a single, stealing second, advancing on a fly by Mercedes, scoring on a wild pitch.

NOTES

  • One day after three Penmen received D2CCA All-Region recognition, the same three received similar honors from the NCBWA.  Reliever Trevor Anibal (Bedford, N.H.) was named First-Team All-Conference, and Schwartz and Roberge were named Second-Team.
  • Rivera has now stolen 31 bases in 35 tries.
  • Roberge improved to 9-3 on the season with a 3.06 ERA.  He has allowed four earned runs in his last four starts (32.0 IP), a 1.13 ERA.
  • Roberge also picked off two Wildcat runners, including Quintin Ivy at second base in the top of the first inning.
  • SNHU has now hit 66 home runs on the season, the most in a single-season in program history.
  • The Penmen are now 7-2 in the first game of East Regionals since 2012.
  • The Penmen are up to 7th nationally in the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Division II Poll.
  • Southern New Hampshire improved to 9-6 all-time against Wilmington, including 3-2 in NCAA East Regional play.

UP NEXT 

SNHU, the top seed, will meet #5 Southern Connecticut State at 11 a.m. on Friday at Wilson Field.  The teams are effectively in a best-of-three series, with two games scheduled for Friday, and another on Saturday, if necessary. Though they are NE10 rivals, the Penmen and Owls have not met on the diamond since April 5, 2019.
