MANCHESTER – The seventh-ranked Southern New Hampshire baseball team held off Molloy College for a 7-5 win Friday to force a deciding final game in the NCAA East Super Regional best-of-three at Delta Dental Stadium in Manchester.  The winner of Sunday’s contest between the Penmen and Lions will represent the East Region in the National Championship in Cary, N.C.

GAME 1:   (Molloy 6-5)

  • Molloy opened a 3-0 lead before the Penmen picked up a hit.  The Lions scored two unearned runs in the second inning, and added another in the fourth on a double by Peter Theodorellis.
  • Senior Sam Henrie (Middleboro, Mass.) doubled in the fourth, redshirt sophomore Nick Schwartz (Massapequa, N.Y.) walked, and redshirt junior Alex Kennedy (Braintree, Mass.) doubled to make it 3-1.
  • The Lions scored two more runs in the top of the fifth inning – Chris Einemann doubled, and another scored on a Robby Keane groundout to end the day for SNHU graduate student Josh Roberge (Chelmsford, Mass.), who started and took the loss.
  • Redshirt sophomore Danniel Rivera (New Britain, Conn.) homered in the fifth for the Penmen, his ninth of the season.
  • Molloy’s Thomas Brady hit a solo homer in the sixth to put his club back up by four, at 6-2.
  • Schwartz homered in the SNHU sixth, and senior Ricky Jimenez (Miami, Fla.) hit a two-run shot in the bottom of the ninth to make it 6-5.
  • Lion reliever Brian Morrisey was able to get the final two outs to save the win for Charlie Chucchiara (7 IP – 3 ER – 3 K).

GAME 2:  (SNHU 7-5)

  • The Penmen jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning.  Rivera singled, Henrie singled, and Schwartz and redshirt sophomore Michael LaRocca (Vero Beach, Fla.) hit RBI doubles.
  • Rivera added another RBI when his sacrifice fly in the top of the second inning scored redshirt freshman John Chacho (Seymour, Conn.), who started the inning with a walk.
  • Molloy’s Patrick Hoffman hit a two-run homer in the home second as the Lions trimmed the lead to 4-2.
  • Both teams scored in the fifth.  Redshirt sophomore Cristian Mercedes (Providence, R.I.) tripled and scored on a single by Henrie for a 5-2 lead.
  • Molloy took advantage of consecutive errors by the Penmen to score runs in the bottom of the fifth to tie the game at 5-5.
  • The Penmen broke the tie in the top of the sixth inning.   LaRocca doubled, moved to third on a wild pitch, and scored on a balk.
  • SNHU added a final run in the seventh when Henrie was hit-by-pitch, senior Dakota Mulcay (Goffstown, N.H.) doubled, and LaRocca hit a sacrifice fly.
  • Senior Angus McCloskey (Farmingdale, N.Y.) earned the win, allowing five runs (two earned) in his 7.1 innings pitched.  He walked two and struck out five.
  • Sophomore Trevor Anibal (Bedford, N.H.) earned a five-out save, setting down the Lions in order in the bottom of the ninth.

NOTES

  • SNHU and Molloy head to a deciding third game for the second consecutive season to decide the series.  Last year, SNHU won the deciding contest 9-2 over the Lions.  Molloy leads the all-time series 11-9.
  • LaRocca returned from injury to play for the first time since April 5.  He led the Penmen with three RBI in the second game.  He was also robbed of an extra-base hit in the first game when Molloy’s Garrett Scavelli made a sensational catch against the well in right-center in the second inning.
  • SNHU has now hit 77 home runs on the season, the most in a single-season in program history.

Anibal had not worked in a game in two weeks, but showed no rust, striking out three for his fourth save.
