Records: SNHU 42-12, Angelo State 53-9Senior Jeffrey Praml (Bridgewater, N.J.) allowed two runs (one earned) over seven innings and freshman Dyrenson Wouters (Oranjestad, Aruba) singled in a run, but the sixth-seeded Southern New Hampshire University baseball team dropped its opener to third-seeded Angelo State University, 2-1, at the 2023 NCAA Division II Championship on Sunday in Cary, N.C.

KEY MOMENTS
  • Rivera singled to start the game and stole second, but the Penmen did not score in the top of the first inning.
  • Caraher opened the second frame with a walk and stole second, advancing to third on a groundout.  Wouters singled to center field to put the Penmen up 1-0.
  • The Penmen failed to score despite loading the bases in the top of the third on singles by Rivera and Schwartz, and a Caraher walk.
  • The Rams tied the game in the bottom of the third. Kamden Kelton singled, was bunted to second, took third on a balk, and scored on an infield single by Thomas Cain.
  • Angelo State took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning.  Tripp Clark, who had singled, scored from third on a groundout by Justin Harris.
  • Freshman Jake Risedorf (Barkhamsted, Conn.) singled with two outs in the top of the ninth inning, but junior Cristian Mercedes (Providence, R.I.) grounded into a force to end the game.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • The Penmen went 2-for-2 in stolen bases. Rivera (50) and Caraher (34) lead the team. SNHU junior catcher Nick Schwartz (Massapequa, N.Y.) also threw out two Ram runners trying to steal.
  • Angelo State starter Aaron Munson (W, 10-2) struck out 11 in his seven innings, retiring 13 in-a-row before leaving. Caleb Heuertz finished up for his fourth save.
  • Praml threw 108 pitches, 71 for strikes.
  • The Penmen went 1-for-6 with runners in scoring position, while the Rams were 1-for-7.
  • All five SNHU hits were singles, including a bunt single by Rivera to start the third inning.
  • Risedorf went 1-for-2.
  • Schwartz was 1-for-4.
NOTES
  • Southern New Hampshire, ranked seventh in the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Division II Top 25 and 10th in the Collegiate Baseball Division II Poll, loses for just the fourth time in its last 35 games.
  • SNHU, in its 11th appearance, dips to 41-25 (.621) all-time in the NCAA postseason, including 3-9 (.250) in its fifth trip to Cary.
  • Angelo State has now won both all-time meetings with the Penmen, including a 7-4 victory in the World Series opener last season.
  • Praml, who is in Cary for the third time, is now 0-2 with a 0.84 ERA in two appearances, allowing three runs – one earned – on eight hits, striking out 11 and walking only two, over 10-and-two-thirds innings.
  • After going 1-for-13 in his first three games in Cary, Rivera is now 5-for-9 (.556) in his last two.
  • Rivera is 10-for-24 (.417) over his last five games, which includes four multi-hit performances.
  • Schwartz is 5-for-11 (.445) in his last three.
