LEC releases preseason poll

PLYMOUTH – The Plymouth State University baseball team has been picked to finish seventh in the Little East Conference (LEC) by the league’s head coaches, as the conference released the results of its annual Preseason Coaches’ Poll on Thursday afternoon.

Plymouth State garnered 24 points to finish just behind Keene State (27) and ahead of VTSU Castleton (17) and WestConn (9). Eastern Connecticut claimed eight first place votes and 64 points to top the poll.

Among second-year head coach Ryan McIntosh‘s returners is senior Luke Sokolski (Waterford, Conn.), the team’s lone All-LEC honoree from a year ago. Sokolski claimed All-LEC Third Team honors after leading the Panthers in several offensive categories while also ranking among the league-leaders in batting average, triples, home runs, RBIs, and slugging. Sokolski led the team in slugging (.432), hits (36), RBIs (23), triples (2), home runs (2) and total bases (51) and went 6-for-7 in stolen base attempts last spring.

Plymouth State concluded last season with an 11-21 mark while going 3-13 in LEC play, finishing in a three-way tie for seventh in the league – one position shy of the final playoff spot.

Plymouth State opens the 2024 campaign with a doubleheader against Bates College at the New England Baseball Complex in Northborough, Mass. on Mar. 2. The Panthers head to Myrtle Beach for nine games starting Mar. 10, and open conference play with a twin bill against Eastern Connecticut State at Dunkin’ Donuts Park in Hartford, Conn. on Mar. 30. PSU’s home opener is scheduled for Apr. 6 against VTSU Castleton, weather permitting.
