EXETER — Andrew Martin tossed three innings of scoreless relief to help the Exeter Post 32 American Legion Baseball team open its season with a 5-3 non-district victory over Haverhill, Mass., on Monday at Phillips Exeter Academy.

Martin, who earned the win, did not allow a hit. Haverhill loaded the bases with two outs in the seventh, but Cam Snee recorded the final out on a strikeout.

“When we got behind we showed a lot of grit,” Exeter outfielder Nick Brown said. “Most of these guys have played together before, and I think the team chemistry is through the roof.

“The first inning was a little rough, but after that all three guys pitched really well. I think we could be a good hitting team.”

Haverhill took a 3-0 lead in the first, but Exeter tied the game by scoring two runs in the bottom of the first and one in the second. Post 32 took a 5-3 lead in the fifth when Shea LaFleur scored on a wild pitch and Jakob Schwarz scored on a groundout by Nate Gallant.

Schwarz, Martin, Gavin Duquette, Ryan Morgado and Josh Rohloff had Exeter’s hits. Rohloff also added an RBI.

Haverhill scored three runs in the first against Rohloff, who settled down and pitched a scoreless second and a scoreless third.

Exeter will play Salem Post 63 at Windham High School on Tuesday at 5:45 p.m.
