Wachter earns preseason accolade

QUEENS, N.Y. – Southern New Hampshire University’s Nater Wachter (Concord, N.H.), Jorge Burgos (Santo Domingo, D.R.), Frankie DeMaro (Newburgh, N.Y.) and Austin Trumpour (Jensen Beach, Fla.) have been named to the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Preseason East All-Region Team.
— Wachter was an NCBWA East All-Region Second Team outfielder, NE10 Northeast Division Rookie Hitter of the Year, NE10 All-Conference First Team and NE10 All-Rookie Team honoree as a true freshman last season. He batted .293 (55-188) with an SNHU rookie-record nine home runs, 62 RBI and 46 runs scored, while getting on base at a .417 clip and slugging .527 for a .944 OPS. Wachter led the NE10 in RBI, while placing third in walks (42), sixth in home runs and runs scored, ninth in doubles (15), 11th in total bases (99), 16th in slugging and 19th in hits.
— Burgos, who was also recently selected as a D2 Baseball Preseason All-America Second Team honoree, cleaned up the accolades last season, taking home American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA)/Rawlings All-America Third Team, NCBWA All-America Honorable Mention, ABCA East All-Region First Team, NCBWA East All-Region First Team, Division II Conference Commissioners Association (D2CCA) East All-Region First Team and NE10 All-Conference First Team honors. The second baseman started all 56 games, hit .330 (66-200), set a new program record with 19 home runs, knocked in 62 runs, scored 56 and slashed .427/.685/1.112. Burgos led the league in home runs, RBI and total bases (137), while ranking second in slugging and runs, third in stolen bases (20), fifth in hits, 17th in batting average and doubles (12), and 18th in on-base percentage. Burgos’ 19 home runs are tied for the third most in league history.
— DeMaro, a National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) East All-Region First Team and NE10 All-Conference First Team honoree in the utility spot, as well as a CSC Academic All-District and NE10 Academic All-Conference selection, made 15 appearances on the mound a year ago, including 11 starts, and also played third base. He finished 2-4 with a pair of saves and a 3.05 ERA over 59 innings, striking out 49 and walking 19, while allowing 56 hits. DeMaro went 25-for-90 (.278) with the bat, hitting a home run, collecting 13 RBI and scoring 17 runs. He ranked seventh in the conference in ERA, 10th in WHIP (1.27), 13th in innings pitched, and 19th in strikeouts.
— Trumpour, an ABCA/Rawlings East All-Region First Team, NCBWA East All-Region First Team and D2CCA East All-Region First Team choice, the NE10 Northeast Division Pitcher of the Year and an NE10 First Team pick, went 11-2 with a pair of saves and a 4.01 earned-run average (ERA) in 19 appearances, including 15 starts. He struck out 98 and walked 29, while allowing 95 hits, over 98-and-two-thirds innings of work. Trumpour led the league in wins, innings pitched and strikeouts, while ranking 14th in ERA.
The Penmen finished 37-19 in 2024, including a 20-7 mark in NE10 play that nabbed them their seventh straight NE10 Northeast Division crown, as well as the Division’s No. 1 seed. Despite a loss in the opening round of the NE10 Championship, SNHU earned its 12th consecutive NCAA Championship berth, swept through the NCAA East Regional I pod and posted two come-from-behind victories in the NCAA East Super-Regional to claim its fourth straight East Region crown and trip to the Division II Baseball Championship in Cary, N.C. The Penmen posted a 7-0 victory over Catawba College in the opener, lost by three to the eventual national champion and dropped a rematch with Catawba to finish as one of the last five teams standing in the nation.
SNHU, which was unanimously chosen to win the NE10 Northeast Division this year, according to last week’s NE10 Preseason Coaches’ Poll, is ranked sixth in the D2 Baseball Preseason Top 25 Rankings, ninth in the NCBWA Division II Preseason Poll and 10th in the ABCA Division II Preseason Poll. The Penmen open their season with a five-game trip to Myrtle Beach, S.C. They will get going Thursday, Feb. 20 (5:30 p.m.) against Queens (N.Y.) College.
