Division III: Derryfield, Belmont advance

DIVISION III SEMIFINALS

Fifth-seeded Derryfield survived a seventh-inning rally and held on to defeat top-seeded Monadnock, 10-9, Tuesday in the Division III semifinals at Robbie Mills Park.

The Huskies, who were seeking their sixth consecutive trip to the Division III championship game, trailed 10-4 entering the seventh, but gave their fans reason to hang around until the end.

Derryfield scored three runs in the second, four in the fourth and took a 10-2 lead by adding three runs in the sixth.

Derryfield starting pitcher Jake Larson held Monadnock to two hits before he was pulled in the fifth inning.

Derryfield will face third-seeded Belmont in Saturday’s Division III championship game and Delta Dental Stadium. Belmont advanced by beating second-seeded Bishop Brady 6-5 in Tuesday’s first semifinal.

Belmont trailed 5-4, but tied the game on a Wyatt Bamford RBI double with two outs in the seventh, and then took the lead on an Alex Rowly double that drove in Sam Binder in the eighth to give the Red Raiders a 6-5 lead.

Belmont’s Wyatt Divers pitched all eight innings.
