STANDISH, Maine – Saint Joseph College senior outfielder Jared Gagne (Dover, N.H.) and sophomore reliever Jonathan Marchia (Chicopee, Mass.) have been selected as the Great Northeast Athletic Conference Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively.
Gagne had an outstanding week to help the Monks go 7-0, hitting .536 (15-28) with 13 runs, a triple, five RBI and 10 stolen bases (one caught stealing). The senior outfielder stole four bases in a win over RPI on Monday, was 4-for-4 with four runs and a steal versus Wartburg on Thursday and went 4-for-5 with a run, a triple, three RBI, and a stolen base in a victory over Illinois-Wesleyan on Sunday. Defensively, Gagne fielded 11 chances without an error while spending time at all three outfield spots. He has been a driving force behind the Monks’ 9-0 start to the season.
Marchia continued to dominate at the onset of his sophomore season, as the right-handed reliever struck out nine batters (14.29 K/9) while allowing just one hit and one walk in 5.2 scoreless innings spanning four appearances for the 9-0 Monks last week. He picked up the winning decision in triumphs over DeSales (6-5) and Illinois-Wesleyan (9-7) while tossing multiple late-and-close innings in both victories.
For Gagne, the GNAC weekly honor is the second of his collegiate career as he first earned the award on April 9th, 2018. The weekly award is a career-first for Marchia.
Saint Joseph’s (9-0) will play a doubleheader at Clark University on Sunday with the first game scheduled to start at noon.
