INDIANAPOLIS – The Southern New Hampshire University baseball team earned a selection to the NCAA Championship for the eighth consecutive season as the No. 2 seed for the East Regional and will host a four-team pod at Penmen Field on May 16-18, the NCAA Selection Committee announced Sunday night when it released its field of 56 teams.
SNHU, which received an at-large bid, will host regional play for the fifth time and first since 2017. The Penmen (36-12) kick off play Thursday, May 16 (3:30 p.m.) when they host seventh-seeded Assumption College (26-18). The winner will take on the victor of Thursday’s late game (7 p.m.) between third-seeded Long Island University-LIU Post (36-14) and sixth-seeded Felician University (30-21) on Friday (3:30 p.m.), while the two losers will also meet Friday (12 p.m.) in an elimination game.
The winner of East Regional II will advance to the May 24-25 Super Regional, where it will battle the winner of East Regional I, which is being played at top-seeded Adelphi University and also features fourth-seeded Wilmington (Del.) University, fifth-seeded New York Institute of Technology and eighth-seeded Franklin Pierce University. The team that comes away victorious will punch its ticket to the Division II College World Series at the USA Baseball National Training Complex in Cary, N.C., from June 1-8.
The Penmen are 23-15 (.605) lifetime in the NCAA Tournament and captured their second regional title last season when they advanced to their third straight East Regional final and knocked off St. Thomas Aquinas College. SNHU, which also earned a World Series berth back in 2012, won a pair of games in Cary for the first time ever to reach the semifinals as one of four teams left standing in the country. Southern New Hampshire finished the year with a 41-17 record.
Southern New Hampshire, which will also make its eighth appearance, overall, in the NCAA Tournament, will meet Assumption for the first time in the NCAA postseason. SNHU is 3-0 all-time in the tourney versus Felician and won its only meeting with LIU Post. This season, the Penmen took two of three from Assumption during the regular-season series at the end of April, outscoring the Greyhounds, 11-5, and blanking them twice. SNHU shut out LIU Post, 2-0, in the fourth game of the season back in February, and did not face Felician this year.
