Nolan Elmore and Zack Clough will be roommates and teammates in a matter of weeks when they begin their college academic and athletic career at Saint Anselm College
On Saturday, Elmore and Clough helped the Northeast Tides remain unbeaten (9-0) with an 8-7 walk-off victory over the Manchester Marlins at Keay Field in East Rochester.
With the scored tied, 7-7, in the bottom of the seventh, Elmore led off the inning with a double over the head of the Marlins’ center fielder. Clough followed with a single to right that scored Elmore and triggered an on-field celebration.
The Tides erased a 5-0 deficit in the contest, as the Marlins scored three runs in the second and two in the third. The Tides took the lead by scoring six times in the bottom of the third. After walk to Aiden McDonough and Ryan Coleman, the Tides produced six consecutive hits. Max Malila’s double scored McDonough, and then Keagan Calero, Sam LaChance, Elmore, Clough and Jonathan Dube followed with hits to tie the score. Northeast took its first lead when Coleman reached on an infield error.
The Marlins regained the lead by scoring twice in the top of the fifth, but the Tides pulled even when Calero stole home with runners on first and third in the bottom of the sixth.
Reliever Matt Bergeron didn’t allow a run in the top of the seventh, setting the stage for timely hits by Elmore and Clough that produced a victory.
The Tides will be seeking to improve their record to 10-0 when they take on the North Short Storm at Peabody (Mass.) High School on Tuesday night (8 p.m.).
