The University of Dayton baseball team used a late offensive surge to complete a series sweep at North Carolina A&T, winning 4-3 on Sunday afternoon. Freshman Matthew Maloney, Windham resident, drove in senior Jay Curtis on a go-ahead pinch-hit RBI single to give the Flyers their first 3-0 start dating back to 2005.
The Flyers trailed 3-0 heading into the eighth inning, but scored three runs to tie it and took the lead in the ninth. Juniors Ben Jones and Rochester’s Keagan Calero each picked up three hits on the afternoon, with Jones also driving in two runs for Dayton.
Redshirt freshman Andrew Casey made his first career start at first base in the contest, reaching in his first four plate appearances and scoring the first run of the game, while Curtis picked up a key stolen base in the ninth inning that put him in scoring position for Maloney’s single.
