Sarcone, Cox earn Ivy awards

HANOVER — The Ivy League announced its weekly award winners for baseball Monday, and Dartmouth had two players receive honors: Trystan Sarcone as the Pitcher of the Week, and shortstop Tyler Cox as the Rookie of the Week.

Sarcone, a 6-1, 195-pound native of Greenwich, Conn., subdued the Ivy League’s top offense on Saturday, holding Penn to one run over a career-long 7.2 innings in a 2-1 Big Green victory. The senior southpaw surrendered the one run on five hits. He walked two and struck out seven on 103 pitches before turning the game over to the bullpen. While Sarcone retired the side in order just once, the Quakers never had more than one player on the base paths. And after Penn pushed its lone run across the plate in the fourth, it did not advance another runner past first base. Over his last four starts, Sarcone is 3-0 with a 2.88 ERA over 25.0 innings with 22 punchouts.

Cox, a sophomore from Valley Glen, California, earned his honor for the second time this season as he was nearly unstoppable in the batter’s box during the three-game series at Penn this past weekend. First, he colleced three hits and drove in a run in the opener, then went 2-for-4 with a walk and two stolen bases, plus scored both Big Green runs in a 2-1 victory. In the series finale, Cox collected a career-high four hits in five trips to the plate with a pair of two-run doubles, matching his personal best with four RBIs in a 10-9 loss. All told, Cox hit .643 (9-for-14) in the series with two doubles, two runs, five RBIs and two stolen bases. He also boosted his season average 45 points to .417, making him the Ivy League’s leading hitter.

Dartmouth (10-11) has a non-conference game Tuesday at UMass Lowell (8-16) with first pitch set for 3 p.m. The game will be streamed live online on the America East Network.
