GORHAM, Maine – University of Southern Maine freshman infielder Zach Mooers (Winchester, N.H./Keene) has been named the Little East Conference Rookie of the Week. It’s the first weekly conference award for the Huskies’ third baseman.
In a five-game week, Mooers hit .375 (6-for-16) with two runs scored and two RBIs. Defensively, Mooers started each of the Huskies’ five games at third base, and had 11 assists and two putouts. Mooers had two multi-hit games including a 3-for-5 effort at the plate against MIT with a run scored and an RBI. In USM’s 5-2 win over Rhode Island College in Little East Conference action, Mooers was 2-for-3 with an RBI. Closing out the week with a 4-1 win over Wheaton (Mass.), Mooers was 1-for-3 with a double and a run scored. Mooers’ double against the Lyons was his third of the season and led off the third inning, allowing the Huskies to score their first run of the game.
For the season, Mooers has started in 17 of the Huskies’ 18 games and is hitting .274 (17-for-62) with four extra base hits and five RBIs. Mooers has helped the Huskies’ defense turn five double plays.
