Borrelli earns preseason accolade

MANCHESTER — Senior Mike Borrelli, a catcher/outfielder on the Saint Anselm College baseball team, has been named to the 2023 National Collegiate Baseball Writers’ Association Preseason All-East Region First Team.

Borrelli closed the 2022 season as a Northeast-10 Conference All-Conference First Team selection. Borrelli started in 41 of 45 games for the Hawks last spring and posted a .325 batting average with a .400 on-base percentage and a .649 slugging percentage. As a junior, Borrelli record 50 hits with 28 of them going for extra bases. He drove in 31 runs and scored 37 times.

On Mar. 27, Borrelli matched a program record with five hits in a 14-2 win against Assumption. In Game 1 of a doubleheader against American International, Borrelli slugged three home runs, including a game-winning walk-off in the bottom of the ninth inning. Borrelli was tied for first in the NE10 with four triples, tied for fifth with 10 home runs, and sixth in slugging percentage.

Defensively, Borrelli registered a .977 fielding percentage behind the plate, committing seven errors in 303 chances. Borrelli also caught 10 runners stealing last spring.

In 2022, the Hawks posted a 22-23 overall record with a 13-11 mark in NE10 Northeast Division battles. The team’s 22 wins were the most since 2012 and the sixth most in a single season. The Hawks set a program record for home runs with 57, breaking a record that stood since 2001. Saint Anselm ranked inside the top-five in team annals in slugging percentage (.456), runs scored (306), doubles (86), runs batted in (274), and strikeouts (303).

In 75 career games, Borrelli has a .316 batting average, collecting 90 hits in 285 at-bats. Borrelli has registered 20 doubles, five triples, and 16 home runs while driving in 58 runs and scoring 61 himself. The senior holds a .374 on-base percentage and a .589 slugging percentage for his career.

Borrelli and the Hawks open the 2023 season Feb. 2 in the first game of a three-game series at UNC Pembroke. The first pitch in the season-opening contest is slated for 3 p.m.
