Burns earns preseason accolade

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Gardner-Webb first baseman Alec Burns was named preseason Big South Player of the Year by D1Baseball.com on Wednesday.

Burns enters his final collegiate season expected to anchor the middle of the Gardner-Webb batting order once again after leading the team with a .311 average and 15 home runs last season. Burns, a 6-foot-4, 225-pound Souhegan High School graduate, slugged .647 and posted a .438 on-base percentage in 52 games.

Defensively, Burns fielded a crisp .997 with one error in 349 chances at first base. An All-Big South selection in 2022, Burns was recently rated as one of the nation’s best at his position by D1Baseball.com as well.

Gardner-Webb opens its 2023 season Feb. 17 against Rider.
