Post handles Saint Anselm
WATERBURY, Conn. — The Saint Anselm College baseball team dropped both games of its non-conference doubleheader to Post University on Sunday.
The Hawks fell to 1-6 on the season with the pair of defeats while the Eagles moved to 3-1 following their opening four-game series. Saint Anselm is back in action Feb. 25 with another non-conference doubleheader at East Stroudsburg University.
Sophomore Daniel Scolaro (Quincy, Mass.) led the Hawks with three hits on the day. Senior Mike Borrelli (Salisbury, Mass.) and junior Zack Clough (Newbury, Mass.) followed closely with two hits each in the twinbill. Senior Mike Pierro (North Andover, Mass.) registered two runs batted in while freshman Ben Rose (Webster, N.H.) scored a team-high two runs.
GAME ONE: POST 15, SAINT ANSELM 7
Post would cross the plate first as Robert Olah managed to put a ball in play with the bases loaded, scoring one run. However, senior Avery Mosseau (Bedford, N.H.) worked his way out of the jam with a groundout.
Saint Anselm responded with a pair of runs in the top of the second. Junior Nolan Elmore (Brentwood, N.H.) and Pierro worked a pair of walks to open the frame before junior Richie Williams (Georgetown, Mass.) singled to plate Elmore. Pierro would score on a wild pitch to give the Hawks a 2-1 lead.
Post found another run in the bottom of the third as Evan Cornwell singled with the bases loaded to knot the score at two. The Eagles threatened again in their half of the fourth with a third bases loaded scenario but Mosseau worked out of the trouble, unscathed.
After a pair of hits to lead off the bottom of the fifth inning, the Eagles claimed the lead on a RBI groundout by Shane Lindemuth before extending the lead on a Michael Pavelchak double. The hosts held a 4-2 lead through five innings of play.
The Eagles tacked on four more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, extending the advantage to 8-2.
A single by Elmore scored Rose as the Hawks cut into the deficit in the top of the seventh inning.
Saint Anselm tied the score in the top of the eighth inning with five runs on three hits and three Eagles errors. Senior Matt Collins (Beverly, Mass.) reached on an error that scored Scolaro, who recorded a one-out single. Borrelli singled to score Clough before Pierro drove in three with a double to center field.
Post struck for seven runs on five hits and two errors to take a 15-8 lead in the bottom of the eighth. The Hawks went three up, three down in the top of the ninth to close Game 1.
GAME TWO: POST 10, SAINT ANSELM 0
After a scoreless first inning, the Eagles would post five runs in the bottom of the second inning. Post got the inning started with a one-out walk followed by a stolen base to get a runner in scoring position. Chris Corchado singled to right field to plate the opening run. Lindemuth collected a RBI on a sacrifice fly to double the lead before back-to-back hits scored three runs to give the hosts a 5-0 lead through two innings.
Three-consecutive hits to lead off the bottom of the third gave Post another run before a sacrifice fly by Pavelchak pushed the lead to seven through three innings of play.
Post added one run in the bottom of the fourth inning to lead 8-0.
The Hawks got off to a strong start in the sixth inning as Clough led off the frame with a base hit and reached second on a passed ball. However, a pair of fly outs and a strikeout would strand him at second.
The Eagles tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the sixth, pushing the score to its eventual final of 10-0.
