Saint Anselm drops two

CARY, N.C. – The Saint Anselm College baseball team dropped both ends of its non-conference twinbill from the USA Baseball Training Complex on Friday.

The Hawks (1-11) fell to nationally-ranked West Chester University (7-1) to open the day by a 17-0 score before suffering a 5-3 loss to Saint Thomas Aquinas College (2-3), 5-3. Saint Anselm will meet Dominican University (N.Y.) on Saturday with the first pitched slated for 12:30 p.m. in Cary, N.C.

Seniors Matt Collins (Beverly, Mass.) and Brady Doran (Seneca, S.C.) and junior Richie Williams (Georgetown, Mass.) led the Hawks offense with two hits apiece between the doubleheader. Senior Will Panarello (Barrington, R.I.) collected two runs batted in on the day which was a team-high.

Sophomore Adam Betty (Lowell, Mass.) and junior Matthew Michel (Haverhill, Mass.) drew starts on the mound for Saint Anselm.

GAME 1: No. 7/10 West Chester 17, Saint Anselm 0

After three scoreless innings to open the contest, West Chester plated the first run in the top of the fourth inning as Corey Stouffer singled through the left to score Luke Cantwell and give the Golden Rams a 1-0 lead. Betty would work his way out of trouble in the remainder of the inning to keep the Hawks deficit at one.

The Golden Rams scored in each of the final four innings of the game, going for three in the sixth, seven in the seventh, four in the eighth, and two in the ninth to reach the final of 17-0.

Betty allowed four runs on eight hits while striking out eight in five innings of work. Williams collected both of his hits in the contest while junior Aidan Dow (Lynn, Mass.), senior Mike Borrelli (Salisbury, Mass.), and Collins registered one hit apiece.

GAME 2: Saint Thomas Aquinas 5, Saint Anselm 3

The Spartans jumped on the board first in the top of the fourth inning. Sean Lynch would get into scoring position with a one-out double and later score on a single through the left side to plate the game’s opening run.

The Hawks responded and took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the frame when Panarello slugged his first home run of the season over the left field fence, bringing around Borrelli who was hit by a pitch earlier in the inning.

Saint Thomas Aquinas tied the score with a leadoff solo home run from Lynch in the sixth inning. A single by Nick O’Connor brought home a run before another single by Christopher Conti pushed the Spartans ahead by a 4-2 margin following the three-run inning.

After a one-out single from Doran, senior Mike Pierro (North Andover, Mass.) doubled which allowed Doran to score all the way from first, bringing the contest to a one-run game at 4-3.

A sacrifice fly in the top of the eighth inning from O’Connor gave Saint Thomas Aquinas its two-run lead back at 5-3, which proved to be the final score.

Michel suffered the loss on the mound for Saint Anselm. The junior allowed four runs on 10 hits in 5.2 innings pitched.
