Freshman Frankie DeMaro (Newburgh, N.Y.) singled home the winning run in the bottom of the 10th inning to give SNHU a 5-4 win over Saint Anselm College in the home opener Wednesday at Penmen Field.  Junior Mike LaRocca (Vero Beach, Fla.) homered with two outs in the ninth to tie the game.

KEY MOMENTS

  • Saint Anselm loaded the bases without a hit in the top of the first inning against Penmen freshman starter Austin Trumpour (Jensen Beach, Fla.), and then scored on a balk.
  • The Penmen tied the game in the bottom of the inning.  Rivera singled and stole second, then scored on a steal of third base when the throw sailed into the outfield.
  • The Hawks moved in front 2-1 in the top of the second on a homer by Will Panarello, a lead they would carry to the bottom of the ninth.
  • Brady Doran homered for Saint Anselm in the top of the seventh inning to make it 4-1.
  • In the bottom of the seventh, Pisano homered, Rivera doubled, and sophomore Anderson Moreno (Bronx, N.Y.) singled to draw the Penmen to within 4-3.
  • With two outs in the bottom of the ninth, LaRocca hit a long home run to center to tie the game.
  • Roberge struck out the side in the top of the tenth inning, setting the stage for the walk-off.
  • Caraher led off the bottom of the tenth with a single, moving to second on a stolen base.  Pisano followed with a walk, and Caraher went to third on a wild pitch.
  • DeMaro, who had come into the game defensively in the top of the ninth, then singled for the win.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • LaRocca’s team-leading sixth homer, and 29th run batted in, rank second in the Northeast-10 conference.   The homer also extended his current hit streak to 15 games.
  • Pisano hit his second homer in three games.  He had hit his first career long ball last Friday against American International College.
  • Freshman Dyrenson Wouters (Oranjestad, Aruba) went 2-5 to extend his hit streak to four games.
  • Trumpour made his second consecutive start against Saint Anselm.  This time he allowed four runs (three earned) in 6.2 innings.  He walked three and struck out five.
  • Roberge followed up his complete-game win at AIC last Friday with a second consecutive win.  He has recorded 41 strikeouts this season in 33.2 innings.
  • Dallas Vaughn turned in a quality start for the Hawks, allowing three earned runs in 6.2 innings of work before yielding to John Donovan, who took the loss.

NOTES

  • Southern New Hampshire played at home for the first time since March 30, 2022, a 10-5 win over Saint Anselm. It was the final game of the season at Penmen Field, which was closed for field repair.
  • SNHU wins the opener of the four-game NE10 series to improve to 60-37 all-time against the Hawks.
  • This was the first extra-inning game for the Penmen since a 9-8 win at Saint Anselm on April 7, 2022.
  • The Penmen continue to produce at the plate, having scored 205 runs in 24 games (8.5).

UP NEXT

The Penmen and Hawks will continue the series on Thursday at 3:30 p.m. at Penmen Field.  The series will conclude with a doubleheader on Sunday at noon.
