Big South honors Burns

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Gardner-Webb first baseman Alec Burns was named the Big South Conference Player of the Week on Monday after helping the Runnin’ Bulldogs win twice in a three-game series against UNC Asheville.

Burns, an Amherst resident who attended Souhegan High School, was electric once again, batting a solid .462 (6-of-14) with a double and two home runs in the series. He drove in six runs, scored four himself and accumulated 13 total bases for a 1.000 slugging percentage. The graduate student also forged a strong .533 on base percentage.

Burns went 3-for-4 with a home run and three RBI in Gardner-Webb’s 13-3 win over the visiting Bulldogs in the series opener, then closed the day with a 2-for-5 effort with a solo home run in the nightcap. He drove in two runs with a double on Friday, going 1-for-4 to spark a late rally for the Runnin’ Bulldogs. Burns raised his average to .279 on the season with his strong week and has belted seven home runs with a team-high 31 RBI so far this season in 30 games.

Gardner-Webb (20-10, 9-3 Big South) has won five of its last six games in league play and sits two games out of first place entering this weekend’s three-game series at High Point.
