Hicks earns LEC honor

PLYMOUTH – Plymouth State freshman Tyler Hicks (Jefferson, N.H.) was named the Little East Conference (LEC) Rookie of the Week on Monday following an outstanding performance at the plate.

Hicks, a utility player, posted a .667/.714/1.667 slash line during a 2-2 week for the Panthers.

Hicks did the bulk of his damage in a 16-15, eight-inning setback at Castleton. He notched his first career four-hit game, slammed his first and second collegiate home runs, scored a career-high three runs and drove in a personal-best seven, while also swiping a pair of bases without being caught. The effort lifted his batting average nearly .070 points.

Trailing 3-0 after the first, Hicks slammed his first career long ball, a two-run shot, well over the wall in left center in the top of the second. He singled, stole a base, and scored in the fourth and gave the Panthers an 8-6 lead with a two-run base hit in the fifth.

Hicks came up again in the top of the eighth with two runners on and PSU trailing 16-10. He took a first pitch breaking ball and launched a moonshot to left field to spark a Panthers’ rally that fell just short as the tying run was stranded at second before the game was called due to darkness.

For the week he went 4-for-6 and drew a walk for a .714 on base percentage, while he also threw five innings in a setback to Southern Maine on Tuesday.

Plymouth State (9-15, 2-8 LEC) hosts UMass Boston for a league game on Tuesday (Apr. 25) at 2 p.m.
