HOW IT HAPPENED
- Southern New Hampshire went ahead in the top of the second on a one-out, two-run double to left field by O’Sullivan.
- An RBI single to left by Sean Welsh and a run-scoring base hit to right from Joe Burriesci tied the game, 2-2, in the home half.
- SNHU went back in front on a sacrifice fly to right by Burgos in the third.
- After walking the leadoff batter in the third, sophomore starter Austin Trumpour (Jensen Beach, Fla.) secured two straight outs, but a single and a walk loaded the bases, before an RBI single from Anthony Manisero tied the game and a no-doubt grand slam to center off the bat of Welsh put Molloy up, 7-3.
- A two-run single to center from Aidan Larkin padded the Lions’ lead at 9-3 in the fourth.
- O’Sullivan responded for the Penmen in a big way, swatting a two-out grand slam to left to pull his team within 9-7.
- SNHU hung another four in the sixth with a two-run double to right-center by Pisano and a two-out, two-run single up the middle from Risedorf flipping the Penmen back into the lead at 11-9.
- The Lions sliced their deficit in half on a JJ Devito fielder’s choice RBI in the eighth to climb within 11-10.
- The Penmen scraped across an insurance run in the top of the ninth on a sac fly to center by sophomore Frankie DeMaro (Newburgh, N.Y.).
- Risedorf set down the Lions in order in the bottom of the frame to send the Penmen back to Cary.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- DeMaro was 0-for-3 with an RBI, a run scored and a walk.
- Sophomore Steven Kienzle (Holbrook, N.Y.) finished 0-for-3, but drew a pair of walks.
- Trumpour (10-2) was charged with nine runs on nine hits over five-and-a-third innings, while striking out two and walking four.
NOTES
- Southern New Hampshire, ranked 21st in the latest National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Division II Poll, has won 13 of its last 15, including eight of nine and five straight. The Lions, ranked 14th in the poll, had captured 12 of their last 14, including six-in-a-row, coming into the weekend.
- SNHU, in its 12th appearance in the NCAA postseason, improves to 48-26 (.649) all-time, including 7-2 against Molloy. The Penmen collect their sixth NCAA East Region crown (2012, 2018, 2021, 2022, 2023, 2024), including their fourth straight and fifth in the last six NCAA postseasons (no championship was held in 2020 due to the pandemic).
- SNHU’s six East Region titles are the third most all-time. Previously known as the Northeast Region and New England Region, it has been won 15 times by the University of New Haven and seven times by Franklin Pierce.
- The Penmen also become just the second program to win four straight East Region Championships, joining New Haven, which claimed four-in-a-row from 1977-80 and then won seven straight from 1984-90.
- SNHU leads the all-time series with Molloy, 14-12, and has captured seven of the last 10 meetings, including six of seven and four straight. This weekend marked the first time the two teams met at Penmen Field.
- Risedorf, who needed 49 pitches to fire three scoreless relief innings against the Lions on Friday, tossed 59 Saturday, as he pitched on back-to-back days for the first time in his career. Risedorf, who threw more than 49 pitches just once prior to this weekend (Feb. 4 vs. Arkansas Tech University), allowed just one run on seven hits over six-and-two-thirds in the two games against Molloy, striking out five and walking one, while throwing 108 pitches.
- O’Sullivan’s home run was his fourth of the season, second of the NCAA postseason and 13th of his career.
- Risedorf has now reached base in 16 straight.
- Wouters leads the team with a 20-game reached-base streaks, while junior Harry Vargas Segura (Bronx, N.Y.) saw his snapped at 19 games.
- The Penmen better their record to 14-5 at home this season and are now 148-34 (.813) at Penmen Field since the beginning of the 2014 campaign.
- The Penmen were playing for an NCAA East Regional title for the eighth consecutive NCAA postseason. SNHU was in the NCAA East Super-Regional for the fourth time (2019, 2022, 2023, 2024) and also made the NCAA East Regional final three times under the old format (2016, 2017, 2018) and again in the 2021 Covid season. The NCAA Championship was not played in 2020.
UP NEXT
- The Penmen will await their seeding for the NCAA Division II Baseball Championship at USA National Training Complex in Cary, N.C., on June 1-8.
