Sophomore Austin Trumpour (Jensen Beach, Fla.) tossed a complete-game four-hit shutout and with home runs by senior Jorge Burgos (Santo Domingo, D.R.) and senior Dylan O’Sullivan (Manchester, N.H.) as SNHU baseball opened play at the NCAA Div. II National Championship with a 7-0 win over Catawba College Sunday.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Penmen took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Wouters singled, and after walks to Pisano and Burgos loaded the bases, Reisdorf singled. Wouters scored but Pisano was thrown out at the plate.
- SNHU put together a four-run rally with two outs in the top of the fifth inning.
- Pisano singled to left field and Burgos homered to make it 3-0.
- Risedorf worked out a walk, and O’Sullivan ripped a long home run to left field to extend the lead to 5-0.
- In the seventh, after walks to Pisano and Burgos, and a double steal, Catawba struck out Dylan O’Sullivan. It was a dropped third strike, and the Pisano broke for home, a wild throw allowed both runners to score for a 7-0 lead.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Trumpour needed just 97 pitches to record the win. No Indian runner reached third base in the game. He set down the final seven batters in order with his fifth strikeout to end the contest.
- Burgos’ home run in the fifth inning was SNHU’s eighth hit of the game and was the first home run of the tournament.
- All nine Penmen in the starting line-up reached base by the fifth inning with eight of the nine recording hits.
- Not to be lost in the effort were several outstanding web gems by the Penmen. Sophomore Harry Vargas Segura (Bronx, N.Y.) made a running catch on a deep drive by Catawba’s Levi Perrell with two on in the bottom of the third.
- Wouters made a terrific throw from deep in the hole on a grounder to end the fifth, and Burgos stole a hit from Sam Hunter in the ninth fielding a ground ball from the right field grass and launching a perfect throw to first for the out.
- Freshman Nater Wachter (Concord, N.H.) had a single in his first career game in Cary.
- Sophomore Frankie DeMaro (Newburgh, N.Y.) singled in the second inning.
- Senior catcher Steven Kienzle (Holbrook, N.Y.) served as Trumpour’s battery-mate and drew a walk in his four plate appearances, one of six the Penmen collected on Sunday.
NOTES
- Burgos ties a Northeast-10 record with his 19th home run of the season, and it ties for second on the SNHU career list with 22.
- O’Sullivan continued his torrid clip in the NCAA tournament in which the Penmen. In SNHU’s six wins, he’s 9-for-21 (.429) with three homers and 18 RBIs.
- Trumpour improves to 11-2 overall, and 3-0 in this year’s NCAA tournament. His 11 wins tie the Northeast-10 record for wins in a season and ties Jeffrey Praml (2023) for most wins in a season for SNHU.
- The Penmen win an opening game in Cary for the first time since a 3-2 win over Minnesota Mankato in the 2012 Championship.
- The shutout was the second in the NCAA Championship for the Penmen, who beat Southern Indiana 3-0 in 2018 on a combined shutout by Shane McDonald and Andrew Lalonde.
- This was the first meeting between SNHU and Catawba on the diamond. Both teams competed in the 2012 Championship but did not meet.
- Chris Shank earns his first win in the National Championship as Head Coach for the Penmen.

- SNHU will play again on Tuesday in the winner’s bracket at the National Championship at 6 p.m.
- The Penmen will play either #2 seed Tampa or #7 seed UIndy (with those teams scheduled to meet Sunday at 6 p.m.)
