SNHU baseball saw its run at the Division II National Championship end on Wednesday afternoon as the sixth-seeded Penmen fell to third-seed Catawba College 18-1.  The Penmen end the season with an East Region Championship, a win in the National Finals, and a 37-19 record.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Catawba opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning.  Levi Perrell singled, and advanced to third on a double by Sam Hunter, scoring on a groundout by Bo Rusher III.
  • Perrell scored on a single by Drew Robertson to give the Indians a 2-0 lead.
  • Catawba tacked on a run in the bottom of the second inning on an RBI single by Sam Hunter that ended the outing for sophomore starter Parker Lendrum (Exeter, N.H.).
  • After loading the bases, the Indians made it 4-0 when Cole Hales was hit-by-pitch and Robertson followed with a two-run single.
  • The Indians tacked on four more runs on six singles in the bottom of the third inning to blow the game open at 10-0.
  • SNHU did not have a hit until sophomore Harry Vargas Segura (Bronx, N.Y.) beat out an infield single in the top of the sixth inning.
  • Sophomore Jake Pisano (Hamden, Conn.) singled in the seventh and homered in the ninth.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • Lendrum allowed five hits in 1.2 IP, walking two and striking out one.
  • Sophomore Jake Risedorf (Barkhamsted, Conn.), graduate student Zachary Gitschier (Lowell, Mass.), freshman Jack Davis (LaGrangeville, N.Y.), and sophomore Connor Jensen (Shelton, Conn.) all worked in the game.
  • Jensen retired the five batters he faced in the seventh and eighth innings.
  • Southpaw Casey Gouge started for Catawba, pitching seven scoreless frames, and earned the win.
  • The Indians put up 21 hits including four each Drew Robertson and Dylan Driver. The duo combined to drive in nine runs.
NOTES
  • Vargas Segura broke the single-season mark with his 50th walk drawn in the top of the first inning.
  • The games with Catawba this week were the first meetings between the schools.
  • SNHU has competed in Cary, N.C. six times and has won at least one game as East Region champion four times.
  • The Penmen played in Cary this season for the first time under Head Coach Chris Shank, the NE10’s Bob Bellizzi Coach of the Year, and the NEIBA Division II Coach of the Year.
