Yard Goats 4, Fisher Cats 2

HARTFORD, Conn. – Danny Thompson Jr. stifled the Hartford Yard Goats (15-17, 54-46) across six frames, but late home runs sunk the New Hampshire Fisher Cats (13-19, 47-52) on Saturday night, 4-2. Third baseman Dub Gleed continued his big week in Connecticut with a two-hit effort.

Thompson Jr. twirled a quality start against the Yard Goats, the first of his career. The right-hander completed six innings for the first time and allowed one run on five hits with seven strikeouts. Reliever Alex Amalfi (L, 3-7) allowed three runs in two innings.

Hartford starter Stu Flesland III fired a quality start as well, as the lefty struck out seven in six innings of one-run ball. Right-hander Carlos Torres (W, 6-4) allowed a run in two innings and reliever Fidel Ulloa (SV, 7) notched the save.

Trailing 2-1, the Yard Goats took the lead in the seventh. First baseman Aidan Longwell singled. With a runner at first, left fielder Mike Antico (3) launched a two-run homer and put the Goats ahead. In the eighth, designated hitter Jack O’Dowd (4) slugged a solo home run which made it 4-2.

Hartford struck first on Wednesday. In the bottom of the third, catcher Jimmy Obertop (3) mashed a solo home run and made it 1-0.

New Hampshire rallied in the late innings. Designated hitter Arjun Nimmala smacked a leadoff double in the seventh. Two batters later, catcher Aaron Parker laced an RBI single which tied the game at one. The Cats took the lead in the eighth. First baseman Carter Cunningham doubled. The next batter, shortstop Cade Doughty, ripped an RBI single, 2-1.

The Fisher Cats and Yard Goats finish their six-game series on Sunday, August 2, with first pitch slated for 1:10 PM at Dunkin’ Park. New Hampshire’s Jackson Wentworth (4-6, 5.02 ERA) is penciled to start against Hartford’s Connor Staine (7-2, 4.45 ERA). Coverage begins at 12:50 PM on the Fisher Cats Radio Network.
