Vermont champ defeats Bedford

Jake Philbrick scored the go-ahead run on a wild pitch with two outs in the top of the sixth inning and Essex Junction, Vt., held on to defeat Bedford Post 54 7-6 on Saturday in the American Legion Baseball Northest Regional.

After Bedford tied the game by scoring three runs in the bottom of the fifth, Philbrick led off the sixth with a single and was sacrificed to second. Bedford’s James Gilbert replaced starting pitcher Jack Hinton on the mound at that point, but was called for a balk that moved Philbrick to third before he scored the go-ahead run.

Bedford, which dropped to 2-1 with the loss, will play in Saturday’s third game and will need to win to avoid elimination in the double-elimination tournament.

Gilbert and Noah Durham each collected two hits for Bedford, which received three RBIs from Hinton.

Essex scored three runs in the first, three in the fourth and one in the sixth. All seven runs were changed to Hinton, who allowed eight hits, struck out five and walked one.

Essex impoved to 3-0.
